How To Get Unstuck In Love!

Just in time for Valentine’s Day, Robin Gorman Newman, featured relationship expert in the new book, The 52 Weeks (Skyhorse), offers the following tips to help you jumpstart your love life. Robin is The Love Coach and founder, and the author of How to Meet a Mensch in New York and How to Marry a Mensch.

Xblog 1Treat Yourself Right
Life can be wonderful. Don’t put yours on hold during your quest to find a significant other. Live in the moment, and enjoy where you are today. Surround yourself with good friends or work on making new ones. Try something new. Take a class. Get a massage. Go on a trip. Read a new book. Sign up for sailing lessons. Whatever calls to you, pursue it. You’ll be happier at the end of the day, and that will enhance your appeal.
The fact is, before you can find a mensch (decent, responsible person), you want to put your best foot forward and be a mensch to yourself. This means living fully and taking care of yourself. It’s when you’re doing that very thing that the right person will come along.

Xblog 3Doing Good Has Added Benefits
Good attracts good. If you give back, you will reap the rewards in more ways than one. I’m a big fan of volunteer work. If you want to meet someone who puts others before themselves, what better way than through philanthropy?
Volunteer in a soup kitchen. Collect coats for the homeless. Visit an animal shelter. Join the PTA at your child’s school. Whatever you choose, you are more likely to meet a big-hearted, quality person who shares your commitment to doing good in the world. Pick a cause that means something to you and consider volunteering, which can lead to some amazing new relationships.

Act Like You Want To Meet Someone, Don’t Just Think It
The average single person, when asked would say yes, they want to get married. Many, though, send the wrong message out to the world! Acting like you want to get serious with someone means having the mindset to make it happen: give people a chance and make a concerted effort to try new things. Most of all, remember to break old socializing patterns that are zapping your energy.

Xblog 4Your Inner Self
It’s easy to get caught up in the daily treadmill of life. Between work, home responsibilities, parenting, friends, health matters, etc., there isn’t much time left over to devote to inner well-being.
Practicing spirituality isn’t necessarily something that comes naturally to everyone, but it can put you in a better place in terms of self-discovery and learning to trust your gut. Whether it’s through meditation, yoga, or studying something like Kabbalah, being still can be very telling. It will serve you well when you endeavor to recognize a true relationship because your instincts will let you know if this person is deserving of your love.

Don’t Be a Repeat Offender
I’m referring to someone who is consistently in relationships that don’t work. Do you tend to choose the wrong type of men or women over and over again?
It is important to take note of your dating patterns and not repeat history. Think about whom you’ve dated and what was appealing, or not appealing about them. It’s easy to be a creature of habit, but if it’s not serving you, don’t venture forward. Just because it feels familiar, doesn’t mean you should allow yourself to get involved.

Be Positive!
No one wants to be with someone who sees the glass as half-empty. Challenges present themselves, and we all have our share of frustration and disappointment. Some people, it may seem, have more than others. But, ultimately, it’s about how you deal with setbacks and your outlook at the end of the day. Be a positive thinker. Surround yourself with upbeat people. Laughter is contagious. So, keep your chin up. Someone might be attracted to your smile.

Xblog 5Avoid Tunnel vision
Expand your thinking and stop looking for just one “type”. If you continue to have tunnel vision, you will limit your opportunities for romance.

Chuck the Checklist
There is no such thing as a perfect person. If you have a huge list of qualities you are seeking in a mate, write them all down, and then discard half the list.
It’s not possible to get everything in one person, and this doesn’t mean you’re settling. It’s about being realistic if you truly want to settle down. Know what you can live with and what is a deal breaker for you.

New Year, New You In New York? No Thanks.

So it’s almost the end of January, and we’ve been wondering if everyone has gotten over the whole ‘New Year’s Resolution’ nonsense yet? It’s cool for you if you’re still juicing kale and doing yoga on your way to work and jogging around Central Park twice a day and everything, but for the rest of us, it’s about that time. That stage in January where the good intentions get thrown by the wayside and those weekly trips to Whole Foods start to feel a little too much like hard work. And that’s okay! Nobody is perfect, so here at Xperience Days, we firmly believe that if you’re not going to be perfect, you might as well do your imperfections really, really well.

Love to eat cake? Of course you do, you’re a human person. So why not learn to make awesome cakes, and eat those. Total pizza fiend? Yeah, it’s a little unhealthy, but you could offset the calories (slightly… ok, not really at all) with a pizza tasting tour. Fan of a nice cold brewski? Go and see where and how it’s made – or take things a step further and learn how to make your own beer! Do you see where we’re going with this?

In the spirit of going easy on yourself and enjoying the finer things in life, we have compiled a selection of some of New York’s most decadent, delicious, and devil-may-care dream days, so that you can choose an experience that takes your worst habits and turns them into a veritable art form!

1. Beer, Cheese And Chocolate Tour.

Dee's US Blog BeerYes that’s right. Nope, no mistakes here. This is a New York tour that is totally dedicated to the very drinks and foods that people tend to try and consume less of in January. In fact, the name of this tour doesn’t even quite cut the mustard, because it doesn’t take into account the sweet and flavorful gelato, sticky pastries and soft, fresh cookies you get to eat – all washed down with plenty of perfectly matched beers and ales. You’ll spend a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon wandering around Manhattan, eating and drinking the most delightful things you can imagine as a tour guide regales you with tales of the city.

2. Manhattan Mad Men Cocktail Experience

Vodka Martini with olive garnish in front of a gold glitter backgroundIf you’re the kind of person who likes to sit in front of the TV with a drink, and binge on marathon Netflix sessions of your favourite shows, then you’re our kind of person! But it’s nice to get out sometimes, see how the weekend feels when you wear real clothes instead of pajamas, and actually walk around, talking to other people. This Manhattan Mad Men experience will take you to some of the city’s most renowned watering holes, where you can sip on sophisticated concoctions, whether it’s a Dirty Martini or an Old Fashioned, as your guide gives you all sorts of insights into the marvellous Mad Men – as well as some real life tales from the golden days of New York advertising. It’s just like watching tv on the sofa, but you’ll feel like you’ve done something and you’ll get a little drunk! Perfect.

3. New York Food Cart Fun

Dee's US Blog PretzelThis is the best. Much like every other entirely unnecessary and completely over the top indulgence on this list, the food cart tour of New York lets you have way too much of a good thing. Laugh in the face of moderation as you gorge on the best worst foods New York has to offer. You’ll get the chance to feast on a smorgasbord of street food staples, ranging daily but including such treats as salty pretzels, spicy jerk chicken, schnitzels and hot dogs, fresh waffles topped with all kinds of creamy sugary goodness, Korean short ribs, and Mexican chocolate brownies. This New York food tour is the perfect experience for those people who are always humming and hawing over what/where they want to eat. Because it gives you the chance to eat everything, everywhere, while a funny and knowledgeable guide treats you to little slices of New York life.

4. Mozzarella Making Workshop

Dee's US Blog MozzarellaYou can learn to make your own cheese, did you know that? You can learn to just get up in the morning and ramble into your kitchen, and just straight up make some cheese from scratch. And it’s mozzarella, which is one of the best kinds of cheese! It’s a proven fact that cheese is the greatest thing that humans ever discovered. If someone tells you that it was actually fire or the wheel, just laugh and walk away because it was cheese. With this workshop, you’ll learn to make squishy, soft, tasty, melty, homemade mozzarella that not only can you eat – but that you can show off to everyone who comes to your door, and feel really smug about. The New York cheese making workshop is fun too, and you’ll be treated to some delicious antipasti while you learn.

Winter Olympics Send Off and Pro Interview with Mick Dierdorff

The 2014 Winter Olympics are nearly upon us, so it’s fair to say everyone here in Steamboat is getting pretty excited! Being the US town that sends the most contenders to the Games, we have much reason to celebrate this year. On Saturday, January 25th, the Send-Off Party for our hometown Olympians will be held in Gondola Square – come along and give our heroes the departure they deserve! Full details of the event can be found on the Steamboat website.
As if we really need another reason to celebrate, Todd Lodwick has qualified as a Nordic Combined Olympian for a record-breaking sixth time, making him the first American to achieve this incredible feat, and one of only a few people to achieve it ever. Read more about Todd Lodwick here.

Huge congratulations to the successful contenders of 2014, but let’s not forget those who were unlucky in qualifying. Before the Olympians were announced, we caught up with Mick Dierdorff, pro-snowboarder from Steamboat, and gained some valuable insight into the mind of a professional athlete.

Q1) Fill in the blank: If I wasn’t a World Class athlete I’d like to be a… ‘World Class Chef!”

Q2) You qualify for the Olympics but the US team pulls out for political reasons. Another country offers you a place. Defect or stick with the team?
Maybe I could kick off the Jamaica snowboard team and then an awesome sequel to Cool Runnings could be made. But if that option wasn’t available, I would stick with the team.

Mick Dierdorff 2Q3) If you had to swap an Olympic medal for one of these, which would you choose: An Oscar. A Grammy. A Nobel Prize.
I would chose a Nobel Prize, it would be pretty epic to come up with something to help mankind.

Q4) What’s the worst injury you’ve sustained?
When I was in high school, three of my friends and I decided it was a good idea to sled down the outrun of a very large Nordic ski jump. There was a large berm with a fence on top that we hit going about 50mph and went flying about seventy feet before we came to a crashing stop. When I stood up I knew something was wrong with my shoulder. I thought I had dislocated it and headed straight to the ER. The x-rays showed that I had cracked the head off of my scapula and split the scapula plate down the middle. I learned that I was very lucky to be alive as the force needed to break that bone is mostly only seen in bad car and motorcycle accidents. We all learn from our mistakes and now I have a six inch scar on my shoulder to remind me of that one.

Mick Dierdorff 3Q5) Describe the relationship between you and the other contenders for the Olympic places. Friendly rivalry and team spirit; or every man for himself?
Everyone is friends and it’s a very supportive, fun, energetic group of people to be a part of. We all cheer each other on at all the races. However, when it comes down to who crosses the finish line first, it is every man for himself.

Q6) Any superstitions or rituals you go through before every race/competition?
I don’t have any superstitions but I do have a specific preparation I go through every race day. It mostly consists of warming up and making sure my body gets the right fuel. I will also go through a lot of visualization about how I am going to ride the course and visualizing the outcome I am looking for. Once I step in the gates I’m ready to do what I do best.

Q7) Do you receive fanmail/what’s the weirdest thing you’ve received?
My rockstar status isn’t quite there yet as far as fanmail goes, maybe someday!

Experience New York One Bite At a Time

Everybody knows that New York is a food-lover’s paradise. Whether you’re just visiting the city or you’re a native New Yorker, there are some foods that you absolutely have to eat when you’re in the Big Apple. The following are some of the best places to experience New York’s most quintessential eats. If you’re looking for gourmet gastronomy, this is not the guide for you. This is about fast, cheap and cheerful famous New York favorites, and where to get the very best…

New York Pretzel 4The Tastiest Twist

You can’t spend a meaningful amount of time in New York without eating a soft pretzel. You just can’t. Soft pretzels are a New York staple, and if you’re not a fan, we’re not quite sure what’s wrong with you. The City Bakery has taken pretzel eating to a whole new level with its hybrid Pretzel Croissant. Yes, you heard right. They’ve created a perfect mix of sesame seed coating, crunchy little salt crystals, soft and buttery inside, and crisp flaky shell. This is one fusion that even the most pernickety pretzel purist can appreciate. Stop reading this and go get one. Now.

New York Pizza 4The Nicest Slice

Pizza in New York tastes different – and we think better – than anywhere else in the world (you’re still incredible though, Italy). A slice of New York pizza is a slice of New York, and one of our favourite places to get a really tasty slice is Di Fara’s on Avenue J in Brooklyn. Zagat’s number 1 New York pizzeria for 8 years running, Di Fara’s is known for its $5 slice and its perpetually long lines. Luckily for Di Fara’s, and you, this is a slice worth waiting for. You can choose from all of the classic toppings and a few exotic ones as well, so whether you’re a pepperoni or a prosciutto kind of person, you’ll get a slice that suits your tastebuds.

New York Burger 5Prime Patty

There are a lot of places to get a really good burger in New York. It’s overwhelming. You can spend from one dollar to a couple of hundred dollars on a beef patty with a piece of bread on either side – but luckily, you can stay on the lower end of the scale and still get something really quite tasty. We have to give a special mention to The Shake Shack’s succulent cheeseburger, but for sheer ‘off the beaten track’ deliciousness, you have to try The Burger Joint.  A ramshackle little restaurant hidden behind a curtain in the lobby of the opulent Meridien Hotel, this place is a true diamond in the not-at-all rough. An awesome, juicy, tasty burger will cost you just a few bucks, but be prepared to wait a little. It gets busy.

New York Hot Dog 4Top Dog

The thing about Hot Dogs it that they can be really, really bad. Quickiemart kind of bad. But sometimes it goes the other way too. If you want to enjoy a mouthwatering wiener, and you’re in in New York, you need to stop by Gray’s Papaya on 72nd and Broadway. These are the kind of hot dogs that bite – you can honestly feel the ‘crack’ of the dog as you take your fist chomp. We’ve heard that you can go here and just have one hot dog, but it’s not something we’ve ever done or are likely to recommend. And if you don’t wash your hot dogs down with a papaya juice, you’re doing it wrong, frankfurtly speaking (sorry).

New York Deli 4Deli-icious

New York Delis. Like little meat-filled oases in a desert of buildings and business wear, New York Delis are as important to the city’s soul as the Empire State building. And their sandwiches are almost as tall, too. Here is how to get the best sandwich in the city;

  1. Make sure you are really hungry
  2. Go to Katz’s Deli on East Houston Street.
  3. Order the pastrami on rye with Swiss cheese, mustard, and any other filling that takes your fancy.
  4. Marvel at it for a while.
  5. Eat it.

You’re welcome.

New York Cheesecake 5The Big Cheese

When it comes to cheesecake in New York, it’s very possible that you’ve heard of Junior’s Cheesecake. Everyone has heard about Junior’s Cheesecake. But you may not have heard about Eileen’s Special Cheesecake, and we think you deserve to know. Eileen has been baking some of the most sublime cheesecake known to humanity since around 1973, and in the last 40 years she has really perfected her craft. Head to this cosy little cake shop on Cleveland Place, and treat yourself to some of the fluffiest, smoothest cheesecake you’ll ever savour.

New York Dylans 4The Sweet Escape

Transport yourself into a multi-colored land of loveliness at Dylan’s Candy Bar. Dylan’s, on Third Ave at 60th Street, has three floors full of every kind of candy you can possibly imagine. If you’re in Manhattan with the kids and you want to bribe them to behave themselves while you do the grown-up stuff, promise a trip to Dylan’s if they are good.  We cannot stress how important it is to leave this particular pay off until later in the day; unless you’re the kind of person who enjoys trying to manage sugar-filled children.

If you think you know better, please let us know in the comments. We’re always happy to do some taste tests to see if you’re right. We’re scientifical like that.

Experience Gifts Holiday Gift Guide 2013

There are only 43 days until Christmas (we’re not counting…) so it’s time to start thinking about the best gifts to get your loved ones! Whether you’re struggling with a fussy sister who already has everything, or trying to find that perfect gift for your first Christmas with a new boyfriend, we’ve done all the hard work for you and picked our holiday favorites.

Gifts for Mom and Dad
First on the gift guide list is the most important people this holiday, mom and dad! If you decide to get joint gifts for them, how about a culinary tour of your local area? Try the famous pizzas of Chicago with the Pizza Tasting Tour of Chicago Experience. Lead by an expert guide, you’ll visit several establishments learning interesting facts and history, all while sampling various delicious pizza slices, including the incredible deep-dish of course! A great idea for getting mom and dad out together this Christmas. If you’ve been inspired to make your own pizza, there’s also the ultimate pizza gift from Stonewall Kitchen, meaning you can take all your doughy knowledge and recreate it at home!

Pizza GolfGifts for Dad
For those who aren’t fans of the joint gift idea, but still need the ultimate gift for dad, get him a Golf Lesson in Philadelphia – a gift coveted by dads all over! Throw in some Pro Golf Balls and you’ve got yourself a very happy father. The expert instructors are on hand to tailor the lessons to your experience, so whether your dad has never played golf in his life or is a weekend professional, the session will be suited to his needs.

Gifts for Mom
Not forgetting about mom, treat her to a Rockville Mud and Merlot Pottery class for that extra special gift idea. Pottery making is relaxing and enjoyable, and with a glass of wine in hand, it’s pure bliss. At the end of the session you get to take home the mug or teacup you’ve made, so this is a gift that keeps giving. You could also wrap up a decorative vase for Christmas Day to give your mother some inspiration!

Pottery HelicopterGifts for Husbands
If you’re looking for that extra special gift for your husband, look no further than the Hands-On Helicopter Flight in Los Angeles. Going up in a helicopter is absolutely fantastic in itself, actually getting to fly the machine is an experience on another level! Trying all the manoeuvres like climbs, descents, turns, level flying and hovers, this is guaranteed to be an unforgettable experience. All Aboard the Intern Ship! Part 5: Tubing

Ahh tubing… well I couldn’t come to Steamboat and not jump straight onto a tube and float down the river now could I?! I admit, at first I didn’t have a clue what tubing was – hey, it only ever rains where I’m from in England! Once we got the tubes inflated and dry bags ready, we find the perfect spot to enter the river… and it’s all hard work from there…

…what?! There is some art and skill to tubing… honest! You still have to avoid those pesky rocks, and what about the other tubers? Making sure everyone is having fun? Ok, well that’s not hard, with everyone around you being so happy and pleasant, it’s super easy to drift down the river and make friends as you go. I suggest going in a big group, the bigger the better, plus you might find you end up picking up some people along the way.

After two hours of gliding over currents and around bends we eventually drift up to Sunpies, just in time to grab some food and drink with plenty of other tubers.

Sitting back, taking in the beautiful sights and soaking up the sun as you float down the Yampa River, what’s not to love?! If you haven’t done this yet, I couldn’t recommend it more, so grab some friends and any form of non-glass container beverage and get yourself into a tube. Just make sure to leave your phone at home, mine didn’t end up getting wet like some people I know… but having a bath in a split bottle of sunscreen! Whoops.

Xperience Days Teams Up With The 52 Weeks

US 52 weeks 3Here at Xperience Days, we strive to get people out there enjoying life, whether that’s doing something extreme, finding a new hobby or becoming a tourist in your own town. It made perfect sense to team with The 52 Weeks, a book for women who want to shake things up a bit and really start living! Here’s a blog post by authors Karen and Pam about the exciting book launch they organised at a MORE Magazine event.

“There is nothing like receiving a gift you don’t expect. That’s how we, the authors of The 52 Weeks, felt when Xperience Days agreed to team with us for our book launch at MORE Magazine’s annual Girls’ Night Out event held in New York City at the Dream Downtown Hotel. The event, featuring makeovers, cocktails and fashion drew over 250 attendees.

US 52 weeks 1The 52 Weeks: Two Women and Their Quest to Get Unstuck, with Stories & Ideas to Jumpstart Your Year of Discovery (Skyhorse Publishing, November 2013) is about our journey to try one new thing a week for a year — from test driving sports cars to target practice at a shooting range to ballroom dance lessons — and how anyone can start making changes in their lives and shake things up. Teaming with Xperience Days for the event made sense: if doing new things is a big message of the book, then let’s work with the nation’s leading experience gift company to make it easier for attendees to get out of their comfort zones! Offering a special discount to try something new was an added bonus for event attendees. Each gift bag included the special offer from The 52 Weeks and Xperience Days.

US 52 weeks 2As we mingled at the event and signed books, we were not surprised to find many women who were feeling like we did at one time and could relate to our story: we were two friends who found ourselves in a state of stuck and needed to get out there again. We had checked off many of our major life goals — career, husband, children, friends – but had lost momentum. We knew we had to do something about it.

The 52 Weeks was one of three books featured that evening and we mingled with many, many women who are restless and want to make changes in their lives. We had such a great time talking to everyone. We have no doubt many will be soon taking dance lessons, racing sports cars or honing their culinary skills – courtesy of Xperience Days!
