Buying gifts for San Franciscans…what you should know

san fransisco header

Buying a gift for a Bay Area birthday boy or girl? If you’re looking for a gift for the San Franciscan in your life, there are a few things you might want to take into account. First though, do remember that buying a gift for a San Franciscan is much the same as buying a gift for anyone, from anywhere – that means you should think about the person first, and the place second. But if you are a little stuck for inspiration, we’ve compiled a few mildly stereotypical dos and don’ts for buying great gifts for San Franciscans. Take a look and get some city inspiration!

Yosemite-Park-Tour_300x240San Franciscans love their tech. Gadgets are always a good idea. You might not have to budgeted to get the latest top-of-the-line wearable for your friends/family (plus, if they’re really into gadgets they probably already have it anyway), but what you can do is supplement someone’s gadget collection with a cool accessory – something like a case or carrier for their phone/tablet/laptop that really reflects them, or some good earphones/headphones to replace the not-always-amazing ones that come with their device.

San-Francisco-Guitar-Lessons_300x240There are a lot of hipsters in San Francisco.  If you suspect your friend/family member/loved one may be a San Francisco hipster, there are a few quick checks you can do to confirm your suspicions. Do they wear check shirts and sport facial hair/geek glasses (guys) and bangs/geek glasses (girls)? Do they have tattoos, live in the Mission District and post everything they do to instagram? If so, they may be a hipster. Buy them a Polaroid camera or an old record player, or an album from a band nobody has ever heard of (except other hipsters).

San-Francisco-Tour_300x240Don’t sweat the small stuff. The cost of living in San Francisco is pretty astronomical. If you are from San Francisco this means your budget for gifts might not be too big – but on the plus side, it also means that their expectations might not be too big either! Keep it small and thoughtful. Everyone is happy.

A nice light jacket or a cosy hoodie. People who visit the city are often kind of surprised at how the temperature starts to plummet at about 4pm just as the fog starts to roll in. People who live in the city are well aware of this, and accordingly know the importance of layers. Any San Franciscan worth his/her salt will always appreciate a nice extra layer for when the evening chill sets in.

Great Gifts for Chicagoans

Chicago header

If you’re looking for a great gift for a Chicagoan, our number one rule is the same as if you’re buying a gift for anyone from anywhere. Think about the person, make notes of what they like/dislike/love, and get them something that reflects who they are and what you know of them.

But sometimes it’s fun to buy into a few gentle stereotypes – especially when there’s a pretty good chance they are accurate – and add an extra ‘local’ touch to our gifts. So read our guide to Chicago gift giving – and from now on, buying a gift for someone from the windy city will be a total breeze.

Chicago-Pizza-Tours_300x240Chicago might have a reputation as a city of hot dogs and pizza, and it kind of is to an extent – but it’s got way more foodie credentials than just its deep dish. If you know foodies from the city, indulge them with an awesome chicago food experience. Whether its a food tour of the city – there are loads of different kinds available – or a gift certificate for a meal at one of Chicago’s excellent restaurants (Aliena if it’s a really special occasion!), a gourmet gift is a surefire foodie win. If you’re on a serious budget, take ‘em for a jibarito sandwich. nobody is ever unhappy with a jibarito sandwich.

Get them Bears anything. Caps, jerseys, tickets… anything. If they don’t love the Bears, you might want to do a background check. They might not be from Chicago at all.

Chicago-Blues-Tour_300x240If they are from Chicago and they love music – or even if they’re from Chicago and have a few drops of warm blood running through their veins – then they have to have an appreciation/love for jazz and blues. If they do, take em out to one of Chicago’s famous jazz/blues clubs. If they don’t, take ‘em out to one of Chicago’s famous jazz/blues clubs (it may be the greatest gift you can ever give).

For Chicago natives who have moved out of the windy city, give them an amazing taste of home with a hand-selected, personalised Chicago gift hamper. Fill it with some stuff they’ll like anyway, as well as stuff that will remind them of home. We do not recommend that you include a Chicago Italian Beef sandwich in the gift, but things like Wrinleys and Twinkies should travel well!

John-Hancock-Observatory_300x240With a little effort and thought, you can seriously please movie-buffs from Chicago. There have been some awesome, iconic movies made and based in Chicago, so if they are into films, make the most of that. Whether you get them a movie tour of the city or a collection of some of the best movies to come out of the city, take advantage of Chicago’s serious movie credentials and get a Chicago movie lover a seriously good gift.

Get them some gym shoes. Not sneakers, gym shoes. There is no such thing as sneakers in Chicago.

Awesome gifts for the Los Angelenos in your life!

los angeles header

Buying an awesome gift for someone from Los Angeles is the same, really, as buying an awesome gift for someone from absolutely anywhere in the States. You think of the person, you think about what they’d like, you find stuff that you know will make them happy. Easy! Of course, you may be doing all of the above and still finding it a little tricky to get that perfect gift, so of course we are here to help you, and to provide you with a little stereotype-based inspiration for buying gifts for the Angelenos in your life (you’re welcome!).

Surfing-In-LA_300x240Take advantage of the weather. LA gets around 300 days of glorious sunshine every year. People from LA tend to really like this, understandably enough. It’s a city full of people who love to get outside under the sun and into the ocean. If you know an active Angeleno, give them the gift of an adventure under the Californian sun. A pair of roller skates, a day out learning to surf, a chance to try flyboarding – there really are endless gifts you can get them that will give them an awesome day out and an even more awesome memory.

City-Race-Urban-Adventure_300x240

LA loves it some coffee. It’s a little unexpected for such a perpetually warm place, but LA is actually the 5th biggest consumer of coffee in the states, and there are 13 coffee shops for every 10,000 Los Angelenos. If they are one of LA’s many caffiends, a really nice coffee related gift is a great idea. Whether it’s a little moka pot and some good beans, or a state of the art coffee machine, a true LA coffee lover will appreciate it.

Farmers-Market-Tour_300x240

Are they one of the many healthy, clean-eating workout people that glide around LA in yoga pants, posting motivational pictures of toned butts and quinoa-based recipes to Instagram? If so, you could put an awesome gift hamper together for them, full of all the little things that healthy LA folk love – almond butter, a sushi making kit, a month’s supply of aforementioned quinoa…

…ok, we’ll let you work out the specifics yourself, but you get the idea!

Rock-Climbing-In-Palm-Springs_300x240

Some good sneakers. It’s true that people from LA love their cars and it’s the most popular way to get around – but you probably haven’t budgeted for giving an entire car to someone right? Sneakers are a little more manageable! And while there is a stereotype that Los Angelinos don’t like to walk too much, they definitely like to work out. Some sneakers or beautiful work out gear will definitely be loved – and used!

Boudoir-Photos-Lancaster-CA_300x240We’re not saying that LA is totally obsessed with physical beauty, but people in LA spend approximately $50 million each year on makeup, skin care, and hair products. As of 2010, In Beverly Hills, there were 200 plastic surgeons for every 100,000 people. There are almost 4,000 salons, gyms and spas in the city. If you’re stuck for a gift idea for someone from LA, you might be on the right track with some beauty products.

How to please a New Yorker with the perfect gift

newyork

Well, this may be one of our most important gift guides of all; New Yorkers are a notoriously difficult-to-please bunch. Now, if you are looking for a great gift for a New Yorker our first piece of advice is the same as if you were looking for a great gift for someone from Tallahassee; think about the person. What they like, what they love, who they are. This is especially true when it comes to people from New York – it is known as the world’s greatest melting pot after-all, so it’s difficult to pin down any definite New York traits – vive la difference! That being said, there are definitely a few little things that tend to be true of many New Yorkers, so if you want to take your gift giving to a whole new level, then read on to get into a New York state of mind…

Brooklyn-Food-Tour_150x120-New Yorkers like food, and New York is one of the best places in the world to find awesome food of all kinds. If they are a New York foodie, the city really is your oyster, and you will have no problem giving them something incredible. Whether it’s something fancy from Dean and DeLuca, a gift certificate for New York’s hottest new eaterie (subject to very regular change), a food tour of the city, or a cooking or sushi making class, an awesome New York food gift is a sure-fire winner.

– Anything that says ‘I heart New York’ is a huge no, unless you are very very sure that 9-11-Memorial-Tour-New-York_150x120the receiver would want it in an ironic, hipster way, and that they know you are giving it in an ironic, hipster spirit. But to play it safe, don’t bother.

New-York-Tour_150x120- Be very, very careful indeed if and when you buy a sports-related gift for a New Yorker. There are many reasons that you should employ caution. The first reason is that a large proportion of people in New York are not actually from New York, so might not be supporters of New York teams. The second reason, and the one that is far graver should a mistake be made, is that there is a long and bitter rivalry between the Mets and the Yankees, and if you get this wrong, you will forever be known as a destroyer of birthdays/special occasions. So tread carefully and make sure you get it right.

– Some New Yorkers are jaded. Ok, in reality they’re not really and there’s nowhere elseSaratoga-Springs-Food-Tours_150x120 they’d rather live, but many sort of enjoy putting on the ‘jaded New Yorker’ front. Give them the chance to rediscover the city with a tour of a particular neighbourhood, or a themed New York tour (street food tasting tours, hip hop tours and themes TV show tours are all pretty good). If this doesn’t appeal, take them to the theatre to see some of what Broadway has to offer. Dinner and a show is one of the best ways to spend a New York evening, and will make a really unforgettable gift for a New Yorker who needs to rediscover the magic of the Big Apple!

Men…Not So Hard to Buy For After All!

Man silhouette

When it comes to buying a special gift for the man in your life – whether it’s your dad, brother, boyfriend, husband or best friend – it can be hard to be original. While you can always purchase that shirt he’s had his eye on or treat him a fancy new gadget, what about going one step further and getting him something he’ll remember forever?

We’re talking, of course, about experience gifts. Giving someone a gift that they can actually use and enjoy means giving them a memory that they will cherish. And with many experiences for two people, you can even tag along and enjoy the ride with him.

Have a look at a few of our favorites below…
