‘Jo on the Road’ Goes in a Hot Air Balloon

JOTR GC FilmstripHello again from the UK! This week, my adventure had me going up, up, up in the air in a hot air balloon floating over Steamboat! What an incredible experience, especially as I had never seen one up close, let alone stepped inside a hot air balloon wicker basket. Once again, I bring you my personal experience so you know what to expect when you climb aboard for this fantastic balloon ride. For my journey I’m joined by a work colleague, Hannah, and we are pleasantly surprised to find we’re not joining romantic couples – although don’t let that stop you; we could both certainly imagine a wedding proposal happening 1,000 feet in the air upon this beautiful hot air balloon ride, over the stunning views of Steamboat.

IMG_6370

After arriving at the launch location we are introduced to our pilot and crew with such a warm welcome, we immediately feel right at ease. Watching as the hot air balloon is warmed up and inflated, we climb aboard, ready for our flight. Our pilot talks us through some safety instructions and explains that throughout the duration of the ride there will be occasional blasts of fire to keep the balloon afloat, which will be quite loud so he may not be able to hear us talking. All ready and raring to go … and just like that, we’re in the air!

IMG_6411It’s a truly surreal feeling, just floating up without a care in the world and only a balloon to keep us up there … unbelievable. I can see why the pilot loves his job so much! I’m in such a state of tranquillity I almost forget to take photos of all the stunning views and the tiny houses below us. It really is quite something. I can’t recommend this experience enough and I honestly feel there are no words to describe the amazing sensation of a hot air balloon ride!

IMG_6405

I find it unbelievable that we drift over Steamboat for a full hour – it seems to really fly past but before we know it we are preparing for landing. Turns out there’s quite an art to landing a hot air balloon – you certainly don’t land where you started off, mainly due to the winds. Fear not, we safely land in a quiet road and the landing crew are already there to help steady the balloon basket as it touches down on the ground. Remembering not to all jump out at the same time, we wait for their signal.

IMG_6416The second I saw another hot air balloon floating next to us I couldn’t resist – I knew what I had to do (photo above)! After landing and driving back to the launch pad, we’re offered drinks and snacks … and some champagne! There’s a small tale to tell as to why we drank champagne, but you’ll just have to try out the experience yourself to find out why!

Always wanted to give it a go, or know someone else that would love to? Check out our 80+ locations and options to climb aboard for your very own hot air balloon ride!

‘Jo on the Road’ Goes Airboarding

JOTR GC Filmstrip

This week’s update, all the way from the UK, is another snowy experience, and this one certainly had me going face-first! Airboarding in Steamboat involves an inflatable sled that you steer with your body whilst flying down a beautiful powder slope, all in the back country of Steamboat. It is an absolutely incredible experience, especially for someone like me who had never even heard of airboarding before! As always, I bring you my own personal account of the experience. This week, I’m joined by Michelle, an avid skier who was even more excited than me to jump onto the airboards.

943559_10201241220222684_1204484360_n

Arriving ready in our ski-gear, we load up the snowmobile with our skis and poles, wrap ourselves up in balaclavas and throw on our helmets. Now fully prepared for our adventure around the backcountry of the famous Steamboat Mountains, we head off up the hill. Fortunately, our guide was a pro at driving a snowmobile, so there was no flying off the track like in my last blog experience – snowmobiling in Hayden.

945058_10201241215022554_191207510_n

The three hour experience begins on a nice easy slope, with plenty of powder to slow our boards down (and fall into) – it’s a really great way to help us get to grips with the feeling of floating on the boards. After a couple of loops on the simple slope we work our way up onto more tracked slopes. The groomed pistes really give us a chance to gather up some speed and experience the steering action – all done with our bodies. Just make sure you listen to the slowing-down and stopping tactics or you may find yourself zooming past your guide and needing to walk back.

936297_10201241215582568_1312930224_n

Jumping onto the boards, head first and clinging on, we set off from the top of a fresh slope and attempt to steer through the trees. The freedom to roam the slopes, whether it be a nice, safe route down the open piste or a trickier side with dips and branches, meant that I absolutely loved it! At one point I did worry that I had lost my guide, but as soon as I popped out onto the cat-track below, he was there waiting to take us back around again – brilliant! It probably didn’t help that I stopped to take photos… well, with all the stunning views, it’s extremely easy to get side-tracked on the journey down!

321326_10201241217102606_153487561_n

I even got to have some fun in the powder on my wide skis too! In between a few of the airboarding runs, I took a break from gliding down on my body and got into my skis. Coming from England, as I’m sure you can imagine, I don’t get to do this much, so I am loving the powder and feeling of floating down an empty piste.

This truly is an unbelievable experience, a real mixture of snowmobiling, powder skiing and of course… airboarding! If you want to give it a go when the snow rolls around again, go check out the experience:

Loading up the snowmobile, I’m clearly ready and raring to go!

‘Jo on the Road’ Goes Snowmobiling

JOTR GC Filmstrip

Hello again from the UK! Last time, I posted a blog about my dog sledding adventure, and this week it’s … Snowmobiling! I know it’s coming around to the warmer season, so it’s slightly bizarre to think back to the inches and inches of snow … but it wasn’t too long ago that I was speeding around Yampa Valley on a snowmobile, so here’s a little insight into my unforgettable tour.

Snowmobile

My experience took place in Hayden on a private ranch, with plenty of land to explore for the entirety of our sunset snowmobile tour – lucky I had a guide or I definitely would have got lost. Starting out in a beautiful wooden lodge where I met the staff, got layered up, and found a helmet that fitted, I was then given a brief introduction to the vehicles … I was dying to jump straight on.

Snowmobile

Having never been on a snowmobile before you can imagine my eagerness to get moving, but within minutes I found myself flying off the track and having to be dragged out of the snow bank… whoops! Apparently I wasn’t quite leaning the snowmobile enough – lesson learnt, time to carry on! Snowmobiling into the beautiful sunset, trying not to be too distracted by the beautiful scenery, I’m suddenly very grateful for all the extra layers and bandanas I acquired in the lodge. It certainly got quite chilly, but fortunately the snowmobiles had heated handles and foot wells.

Snowmobile

Around 30-45 minutes later we stopped for a quick photo opportunity and were given a chance to swap over drivers, which opened my eyes to what a snowmobile can really do, I was literally holding on for dear life! Zooming along the tracks, flying over bumps, leaning into turns … unbelievable! As soon as it was my turn to get back in the driving seat, I attempted to steer the snowmobile with the same ease and skill that my friend did … well, I think it’s safe to say I need some more practice.

Snowmobile

With a perfectly timed sunset watched from a high point along our route, we turned off the engines for a little while to soak up the atmosphere, taking plenty of photos and enjoying the views … all before getting ready to head back to our starting point for some hot food and cookies. The perfect end to the day, if you ask me!

Snowmobile

The fantastic two to three hour experience is excellent for both beginners and confident snowmobile riders. Not only did I get to witness a beautiful sunset, I drove around in the darkness with only the snowmobile lights to guide me back! Just make sure you’re wrapped up warm with clear goggles …. I can pretty much guarantee you’ll leave wanting to come back right away.

Stick around for more adventures from my visit to America, including dog sleddingairboarding and hot air ballooning!

‘Jo on the Road’ Goes Dog Sledding

Hello from the UK! As mentioned in the last Xperience Days blog, I came over to America the other week to see what you guys had to offer, and I can honestly say, I struggled to leave! Once I had recovered from the jet-lag I hopped into a sled and got whisked away into a land of snow-covered tranquillity … led by a pack of dogs.

After arriving at the centre we were introduced to the dogs and the sled itself; it requires quite a bit of technique to get the sled moving in the right direction, especially on corners and down hills. Whilst the staff are strapping up the dogs and checking over everything, we prepare for our journey: warm clothing, goggles on, and one of us sitting in the cosy sled, the other ready and raring to go on the break pad at the back of the sled.

Then the dogs are off! I’ve never been so amazed as they all turn silent and happily run in sync up the hill and around the track – the incredible transformation from never-ending barking and pacing in their pens to silent and focused running is staggering! Because I’ve never been dog sledding before, my partner takes the controls first and leaves me to enjoy the ride. I’m stunned into silence by the calm and peaceful atmosphere as I’m taken around the lengthy track taking in the beautiful scenery.

When it comes to my turn controlling the sled, I’m a little nervous but the second the dogs are off all worry goes and I focus on sticking to a sensible speed and enjoying the ride myself. Using a combination of the rubber mat and metal bar to slow the sled down and my body weight to steer it, I find myself loving this part of the experience. Luckily my partner trusted me enough – I was worried they may not have felt safe having their life in my hands!

An hour later and we’re nearly back at base – the dogs look nearly as gutted as us to be back already! Fortunately we both took plenty of photos around the track and even stop to have some pictures of us together on the sled … making sure not to step off the breaks or we may find the dogs running away with the sled with my partner strapped in! Once back we’re allowed to take photos of the beautiful (and extremely tired) dogs, and it turns out they own 112 altogether. I had to stop myself from going around to each one individually to take a photo and pet them!

I really did start off my week in the US with a banger, although I now have a real desire to immediately go and buy a dog myself … as you can see, they’re unbelievably cute!

Stick around for more adventures from my visit to America, including snowmobiling, airboarding and hot air ballooning!

Here at Xperience Days, we provide anything and everything from pamper days to biplane rides, but how do you know the gift you’re about to give to your loved one is going to be the best gift they’ve ever received?

Well, over Jo’s week-stay here we sent her out to a few of our experiences to get the low-down for you guys. We want you and your loved ones to have the best experience of your lives, so it’s only fair you know what to expect before you go … and that’s why we sent Jo in first! She filmed, photographed and experienced everything from dog sledding to flying a plane, and is now going to tell you all about her trip. We also sent her to hit up the ski slopes and explore Steamboat a little … well, if you’re coming to visit such a beautiful place we felt we should show it off a little!

Stay tuned to hear all about Jo’s big adventure in Steamboat!
