Super-Sonic Seattleites…A Gift Guide!

Seattle Header 2Seeking something perfect for a Seattleite in your life? Lucky you, you’ve come to the right place – we’re here with a list of helpful hints to help you get a great gift in Seattle. Of course, our first piece of gift giving guidance to anyone, buying anything, for anyone, from anywhere is to buy for the individual. Just think about them, and what you know about them, and what they like and love, and buy them something you know will make them happy. That said, you can always garner a little extra information and inspiration with the healthy use of a few harmless Seattle stereotypes and a little insider city-knowledge, so read on, and find out our list of dos and don’ts to help you choose the very best gifts for the Seattleites in your life!

Seattle 2Don’t get them an umbrella. No one uses them, even though one of the city’s nicknames is actually ‘Rain City’ and it averages less than 60 days of sunshine every year. We don’t know why, or what Seattle folk have against them, but umbrellas just don’t happen in Seattle. If you don’t want to cause your Seattle friends and family to stick out like a sore thumb in their hometown, steer clear of umbrellas as a gift. This should not be too difficult to do; being that umbrellas are not generally popular gift items. But just in case…

Seattle 1Seattle is a hipster zone. Being honest, most cities throughout the US are hipster zones these days, but Seattle has its own little hipster population, and if your friend or loved one belongs to it, you might want to take that into account when buying their gift. Do they hang out at places like Oddfellows or Bauhaus Books and Coffee? Then they may be hipsters. Whatever you get them, make sure it’s something that hasn’t become cool yet, but definitely will, so they can tell everyone they had it before it was mainstream. If you can’t think of anything, vinyl or a polaroid camera is a pretty safe bet.

Seattle 3Seattle is a goooood city for music, and it’s brought us some serious greats – Nirvana, Jimi Hendrix, the Fleet Foxes, the Foo Fighters, Pearl Jam, Death Cab For Cutie, and even Macklemore himself hail from the city. People from Seattle love their music. Impress them with tickets for a gig, or (a great budget option), music or merchandise from some of their favourite Seattle musicians.

This is the city that brought Starbucks to the world. That tells you a little something about the amount of coffee drinkers it’s home to. If your Seattleite is a fiend for caffeine, get them a coffee-related gift. If you put a little time and energy into this, it will be amazing. Create a little coffee-lover gift hamper for them – include the best local coffees, a mug that is totally ‘them’, a moka pot, some gourmet cookies… You’ll be in their highly-strung good books for a long time!

Great Gifts…Miami-Style!

Miami HeaderWelcome to Miami, where the people are beautiful, the sun shines, and the music is always bumping. If you’re looking for an amazing, perfect gift for the glam Miamian in your life, you’ve come to the right place. In fact, even if you’re looking for a gift for a not-so glam Miamian, you’re in luck. There are a few things that it’s fair to say about lots of people from Miami, and we’ve compiled those… well, those stereotypes… into a handy little list of tips to help inspire you in your search for a great Miami gift! So read on, and find the perfect gift for your Miami friends and family!

Miami 1First of all, Miamians like to chill! We don’t know if it’s because they are so totally wiped out from all that beautiful sunshine, or they’re exhausted from all the partying, or they’ve worked out too much, but Miami people relax, they really relax. If they enjoy maximum chillage, Miami-style, we recommend a spa day, a massage, or anything else that will aid their much-loved R&R.

Miami 2It makes total sense that the inhabitants of a city blessed with almost constant sunshine will be extra-interested in keeping those bikini bodies and abs all in-shape, firm and washboard. Miamians like them some health and fitness. If your loved one is the type to do yoga on the beach and is always drinking something that taste like grass, it’s a safe bet that some new workout gear, a juicer, or a gym membership will go down really well. If they’re outdoorsy, take a look at our Miami and Florida active experience gifts… they sound like the type who will love a new and exciting challenge!

Miami 3Miami is a straight up party-town. The clubs are always hopping, the DJs flock here, everything is sleek and bling and swag. If your friend/loved one is a party animal (like many Miami mamis and bros), indulge their wild side. If you can get ‘em on the list  for Miami’s hottest clubs, do that, but if you’re not quite that connected, how about some gorgeous new threads to help them strut their stuff on the floor?

We would recommend that you maybe don’t get them tickets to Disneyworld. Unless they are children; children will always want to go to Disneyworld. Kids don’t even have to be from Miami… or Florida… or the States… for that to be an awesome gift.

Miami 4A nip or tuck? Well come on, it is the home of everyone’s favourite plastic surgeons, Dr. Sean McNamara and Dr. Christian Troy. But fictional doctors aside, there are hella plastic surgeons in Miami. It’s a big thing. We do not recommend getting this for someone unless you are 110% sure that it’s something they would appreciate.

Do they like food? If they’re from Miami, they like Cuban food. Take them for Cuban food. Actually no, forget them, take US for Cuban food…

Birthday Gift Guide

US Birthday HeaderBirthday gifts are definitely the most fun kind of gift to buy for someone. For one thing, unlike other holidays, a birthday is all about one person who you know and love well enough to buy a gift for – this isn’t about checking off a list of names and choosing socks for an uncle you see once a year! But if you’re getting someone a birthday gift, of course you want it to be a really good one! And sometimes, even the best intentions turn into bad birthday gifts. So we’ve put together some of our top tips for buying the best birthday gifts, to help you become a great gift giver and give your friends, family and loved ones the best birthdays they could hope for!

US Birthday 1Know your audience. Really, spend time thinking carefully about the person you’re buying for. Yes, you know that they play golf and love dogs, but what about the smaller stuff? You want to do better than an annual golf-related gift right? What’s their favorite color? What makes them laugh? When are they happiest? If they had three wishes, what would they wish for? These are the questions you should ask yourself about them. Make a list and keep it in your mind, and you’ll start to see gifts that you might not have previously considered. These are the gifts that show you’ve really considered the person you’re buying for, and they’re the gifts that make people feel most loved and happy.

US Birthday 2The 5 p’s – Proper planning prevents poor presents. You may know the birthday girl or boy more than you know anyone else in the world. You might have the best idea for a gift for them, one that you know will make them cry with joy and feel completely loved – but you need to give yourself time to get it. Many a birthday and Christmas gift is ruined when shops sell out of certain items, or internet delivery means that there’s no way a gift will arrive in time. Be organised.

Taking little notes throughout the year is a great idea. When you see something online that you know someone will love, bookmark the page. Make a special ‘gifts’ folder. Likewise if you hear someone talk about something they love or would love, write it down, and it’ll help you when their birthday draws near.

US Birthday 3Consider the occasion. Is it a sweet 16th, 21st, 30th etc? If it’s a big birthday, go a little bigger with the gift than you would for a regular birthday. If this means pooling resources with a friend or two, do it. Give the birthday girl/boy something to remember their big day with!

Finally, if you know lots about the person you are buying for, and you feel confident to do it, by all means put together a little birthday gift set. Five or ten smaller items that you know they’ll really love in a nice basket or box shows that you’ve really put some time into them and their gift, and that’s what makes people happiest of all when they receive a gift!

A Guide to Buying the Perfect Christmas Gift

christmas headerBuying the perfect Christmas gift for friends, family and loved ones can be a pleasure, but it can sometimes be a pain too. That’s the thing about Christmas gifts – if you nail it, you nail it and you make someone you care about really happy on a special day… but get it wrong, and you have to watch them try to hold an enthusiastic expression on their faces as they thank you, feebly, for the socks/soap set.

So what are the main things to keep in mind when you’re buying Christmas gifts? Well, we like to think we know a thing or two about gift giving, so take a look at our top tips for Christmas shopping before you hit the stores this winter.

St-Louis-PHotography-Workshops_300x240Decide if practical is preferred. Yes, of course, we all know that the ideal Christmas gift should be something we want and not something we need - but let’s be real here; sometimes we quite simply want what we need, and nothing more. If this is the case, don’t sweat it – it might not seem terribly romantic or special, but if you’re getting a new microwave for someone who really desperately needs a new microwave, your gift will be greatly appreciated.

If time is an issue when buying gifts, shop online. It’s a no-brainer, really, and while it’s not quite as festive and atmospheric as icy, fairy-lit streets in December, it’s quick and relatively stress-free. Just make sure you give yourself plenty of time for delivery.

Atlanta-Wine-Tasting-Classes_300x240DO NOT get them things you like. Get them things THEY like. This seems simple, but you’d be surprised how many people see something they love, and simply can’t fathom a person they love not loving it too. This is how bad gifts happen to good people. Yes, you will inevitably be drawn to the things you like, the things that catch your eye, that make you think ‘well I’d love to get this’! So our recommendation is, when shopping for Christmas gifts for specific people, make a little list beside their name of what they like, who they are, what colors they love and what hobbies they’re into. Refer to your list whenever you need to, which if you’re anything like us, may be quite often.

Dolphin-Watch_300x240Another time-saver for families and groups of friends when it comes to buying Christmas gifts is to see if everyone is into doing a secret santa. Decide on a budget that everyone is ok with, and then just pick names out of a hat and buy for one person. You can use gifting sites and apps like Elfster to leave hints for each other, so if you pick your semi-estranged brother or that one friend you never really clicked with, you can still get them something awesome.

Pool resources. This is a tip we give a lot, and for all kinds of gifting occasions. If you’re working with a budget, throw it in a pot with a few other people and get someone xmas logosomething a little bit more special.

Finally, enjoy yourself. It’s Christmas, and it’s supposed to be fun! You might find it difficult to buy for a few people, but don’t get too stressed. The point of Christmas is to spend time with the people you love and be thankful for what you already have. The gifting is just the icing on the (Christmas) cake!

Happy holidays!

Gifts For Your Brother

brother collageOh, brother. This one can be difficult. We don’t know what relationship you have with your brother – some of you are like Prince William and Harry – you go together like peas and carrots, you’re close as best friends. You know each other inside out and hang out with each other all the time. But some of you are a little more like Bart and Lisa, and aren’t quite so… in tune with each other’s loves, likes and dislikes.

Shifter-Kart-Racing-Phoenix_300x240

So obviously how you buy gifts for your brother, and what you buy them, can be drastically different depending on the relationship you have – and either way, can present a bit of a challenge!

No sibling rivalry here, please! There’s a time and a place for that (around the monopoly board after Thanksgiving dinner, for example). Don’t compete to get each other bigger gifts that cost more money. Within families, it can be a really great idea to set a general budget that you stick to, to avoid any embarrassment or even resentment on Christmas day.

Ask around. If you’re not super close with your bro, and you want to surprise him with something cool, ask other people. Is he married? If he is, ask his wife. If he’s not, get on facebook and reach out to a few of his friends. Find out things about him that you may not already know, and use that information to really make his day with a present he might never have expected from you!Jetpack

A half hour online can reap better rewards than a week in the stores. Say he loves Star Wars. Sure you can find some merchandise in the city, but where you find the really weird and original Star Wars stuff is online. Let google be your friend, and remember to leave plenty of time for delivery.

Forget the dynamic. If you are both adults, forget about the big/little brother/sister roles. We know that big brothers and sisters can sometimes always look at their little siblings and see a toddler, but don’t let that color your choice of gift!

Zipline

If it’s his birthday or his wedding day – any really big occasion where you might want to push the boat out – remember that you can always pool resources to make his gift extra special. If you have more siblings, make it a family affair – they’re the perfect team to recruit to your gift extravaganza. Get them involved and choose something truly awesome, something you couldn’t get him on your own, and that he’ll never forget.

NASCAR-RACING-TRACK-DAY_300x240

Give him the chance to do something really cool. Drive a NASCAR, jump out of a plane, whatever you think will ramp his adrenaline up a few notches. This is not only an awesome gift for him to enjoy, but a really easy way for you to win the title of best brother/sister ever.

You’re welcome! Happy shopping.

Gifts For Adrenaline Junkies!

JOTR GC FilmstripAdrenaline junkies are some of the easiest and most fun people you will ever buy gifts for. You know the kind – they’re always off at weekends doing something weird or wonderful, whether it’s jumping out of a plane, jumping off a crane, flinging themselves down a snow covered mountain, galloping along a beach on horseback… They live for the buzz of adrenaline they get from going fast, going high, and living on the edge.

But as easy as it is to get something perfect for the adrenaline junkie in your life, there are a few basic dos and don’ts you should follow to make sure that what you get them is the perfect gift. Read on for our top tips for buying for adrenaline junkies.

2442_1No random ‘stuff’. Of all the people you could get random ‘stuff’ for, the adrenaline junkie will appreciate it least of all. They live life on the edge. They do the kind of stuff that makes other people’s stomachs flip. They put themselves into crazy situations just for the hell of it. What do they want with a Christmas jumper or travel scrabble?

The exception to the above – if you do get them ‘stuff’, make it relevant. An awesome new helmet for snowboarding, some goggles for skydiving or a fitness tracking watch – these are acceptable. But never travel scrabble.Rafting On The Nantahala River For Two

Deviate from their norm. If they are an avid scuba diver, and they go diving every second week, a voucher for some dives might not be that exciting for them (unless of course those dives are in Baja and are accompanied by some flights!). But if they might like to try a freediving course, or something else cool and water-based like wakeboarding or a water jet pack flight. Give them the chance to try something new.

Skydive In Santa Barbara

If you want to go big, pool resources. We say this a lot because we really mean it – if you want to surprise someone (or a thrill seeking couple) with something really awesome like a skydive, but you can’t quite afford it, reach out to some other people. Pool your money and get them something they’ll never forget.

Full Throttle Stockcar Ride Along

Think about where they are and what’s on offer. If they’re in Colorado and it’s winter, look to the mountains and snow for your inspiration. If it’s summer, you could think about more river-based adrenaline-pumping action like white water rafting or canyoning. If they regularly visit somewhere, you could also see what’s on offer there, and give them something amazing to do on their next holiday.

California Bungee Jumping For Two

Bear in mind that they are not superman/woman. Even the most addicted adrenaline junkie might have a fear or limit, so bear that in mind when you’re searching for the perfect gift for them. If they’re not too strong at swimming, stay away from the water-based stuff.

Finally, if you are a fellow adrenaline junkie and thrill seeking is something you do together, it’s totally acceptable to get a gift for both of you to do together. Unless this is a wedding gift. Then, no. Happy shopping!

Wonderful Gifts For Wives

wives collageWhen you buy your wife a gift, it matters – more than you may even know. Of course, anyone who has ever gotten it wrong with a gift for their other half will know exactly what we mean! Your gift isn’t just something for her to have or a mere token to celebrate her birthday or the holidays, it’s your way of saying how much you love and appreciate her and – crucially – showing her how well you know her, and how in tune you are with her.

Jet-Lag-Massage-In-New-York_300x240

So think hard before you buy. Think about her style, her hobbies, her hopes and her dreams – think about all of it before you spend a cent. Oh, and take a look at our top tips – some dos and some definite don’ts – for buying gifts for your wife!

Valentine’s Day is kind of about her. Yes, we know it’s old-fashioned and we know it’s not fair, but Valentine’s Day is about old-school romance – flowers, chocolates, champagne, sweeping your lady off her feet… Of course, she may get you something too, but that’s besides the point. You gotta step up and pull out all the stops.

Take the hint. Most women will let you know what they want, and almost as many will have the grace to act totally surprised when you get it right. Not all hints are subtle – but if your wife isn’t very vocal about what she’d love, you need to pay attention. She might not want to outright ask you or be too obvious, but if she mentions things that she loves, even in passing, and no matter how innocuous it is – that’s a hint. Take it.

Oregon-Wine-Tasting_300x240

Preparation is key. Take notes, do some online research and give yourself plenty of time to get everything – take into account delivery times, especially at busy times of year. Do not be left in a panic on Christmas eve, or you’ll wind up giving her an amazon voucher, and as useful as that is, it doesn’t exactly say “I know and love you more deeply than I know and love anyone”.

If she’s a mom, give her something that allows her to not be a mom for a while. That might be a night out dining somewhere special with you. It could be a luxurious spa day. It might be a day doing something she loves, or a wine tasting experience – whatever. Just give her that break! Arrange a sitter too.

No appliances. None. Ever. Don’t do it.

cf81fc225f46a4f94b8e69e2fcefed4d1Enjoy the process. The key to this is giving yourself enough time to enjoy the process. With enough time, you can relax and really look around. You’ll start to remember little things that you saw that made you think of her and recall small hints she gave. When you know you are getting someone an awesome gift, it honestly feels as good as getting an awesome gift. Relish in that. Revel in it. The payoff isn’t just in her delight with the gift, but also your own satisfaction at nailing it and making her happy. Win win!

Happy shopping.

Gifts for Water Babies

ocean

Water babies come in many forms. Some of them like to be submerged in it, as much and as often as possible. Some like to stand on things, like surfboards and SUP boards, and travel along the surface of it, either slowly or at speed. Some like to sit in things, like kayaks and and do the same. There are those who like to catch food out of it, and many who like to get dragged along behind boats on it.

Some go to lakes, some go to rivers, some the ocean, and if they have access to all three, most will take advantage of each. These people live to be on, in and around water, so if you’re looking for an excellent gift idea for someone who likes to get wet, read our top tips for buying the best gifts for water babies.

Key-Biscayne-Paddleboarding_300x240These people can be easy to buy for, which is great news for you. Much like the water they adore, water babies can be wonderfully fluid and will fit easily into different molds. So, if your recipient is an avid  surfer, but you want to get him/her something different, there’s a good chance that he/she will be happy to try any new, different water-based activity. The love that these people have for the water – if they’re real water babies – will transcend their favoured sport. A diver will probably love wakeboarding and surfing. A white water rafter will probably love SUP or flyboarding. Think outside their usual box.

La-Jolla-Kayaking-And-Snorkeling_300x240Stuff’s good. You can give them the chance to spend time in the water, or you can give them something that will enhance their experience when they’re there. Swimmers need goggles, divers need masks, surfers need… well, surfers don’t need much, but there’s plenty they might want! Waterproof bags to keep phones and other valuables safe and dry, GoPro accessories, those cool robe towels for getting out of a wetsuit in public… there are loads of awesome bits of kit that water babies will love, so get online and do some research!

Bodega-Bay-Surf-Lessons_300x240

Speaking of online, it can often be the best place to buy as well as to do your research (particularly if you have little time to work with). Even if you live in a big surf town, a famous diving destination, or on the banks of some serious whitewater, it can be difficult to find more unusual and original items to give as gifts.  It can be the difference between getting someone a new wetsuit, and getting them a new wetsuit in their favourite colour, with a matching hood and boots. These things matter! Just give yourself enough time for delivery.

Charleston-Flyboarding_300x240

Experiences really are a winner. We know, we’re an experience gift company, we would say that right? But the thing is, it’s true. If you are buying a gift for someone who adores water and watersports, then giving them the chance to get in the water and do some watersports is pretty much the perfect present. Obviously if you are buying a gift for your great-aunt Mildred who can’t swim we’ll give you different advice, but in this instance trust us…

…for water babies, experience gifts are perfect.

Perfect Gifts for Portland People

Portland HeaderHow to get the perfect gift for Portland people… well, you may or may not have realised it (you probably have) but Portland has, over recent years, become one of the most heavily and enthusiastically stereotypes cities in the States (you’ve got a lot to answer for, Portlandia). Now, we’re not saying everyone in Portland embodies the stereotypes that get bandied around, but there are definitely a lot of bearded, tattooed, vegetarian/vegan, dog owning, beer brewing, gluten intolerant, urban farming feminists in the place.

With that in mind, if you are looking for a little extra inspiration when buying gifts for your Portland peeps, just read on, and discover our little list of top tips for Portland gifts.

portland collageSomething for their dogs. Portland is renowned for being a super dog-friendly place, where it is not totally unheard of for people to have little umbrellas for protecting their dogs from the rain, or to push them round in strollers. There are 33 dog parks in the city, and it even has its own social network for dogs. If you are friends with one of those people, you’ll probably earn a special place in their hearts if you include their little hairy baby in your gift.

If they like gluten, get them some gluten. Because it seems to be pretty rare in Portland.

Portlanders love to cultivate. Whether you call it ‘Urban Architecture’, or ‘Homesteading’, or you’ve come up with some new cool hipster Portland name for it, the basic premise is the same – self-sufficiency where possible, organic food, grown and harvested by you. If your Portlander people are into that, a gift that facilitates it will be really appreciated. Maybe it’s a new veg box, a new chicken for their coop (or a new coop for their chickens), or a set of gardening tools – whatever you find for them, it’s a gift that will be not just cherished, but used.

It rains a LOT in Portland. This may be useful for all the home growers and urban farmers, but all those colourful vegetables come at a price – grey skies and a lot of constant drizzle. What this means though, is that people in Portland will always need cute raincoats and lovely umbrellas, and they can be a lovely gift to give. It does mean that an adorable watering can may not be the best gift for the cultivators mentioned above, but you got to take the rough with the smooth!

Portland is big on beer. If they are from Portland and big on beer, a brewery tour of some kind or a gift basket of some of the best beers available in the city (or all of the above) is an amazing gift. Add some awesome local produce to the hamper for an extra-special and extra-‘Portland’ vibe! Happy shopping…

Gifts For Denverites

denver headerIf you’re looking for a little inspiration to help you find the perfect gift for the Denverites in your life, look no further. Here at ExperienceDays.com, we’ve helpfully taken some of the best-known stereotypes that people have about Denver and its inhabitants, and used them to compile a Denver gift guide that might just give you the help you need in picking the greatest gift possible for your Coloradan comrades! Obviously, you should always, always buy people gifts based on what you know of them – but there are definitely some things that are true for a lot of Denverites, so read on to find out our top Denver gift buying tips!

Make sure yAirboard-Lesson-Steamboat_300x240ou shouldn’t actually be checking out our gift guides for other cities. A LOT of people in Denver are not from Denver at all, but have migrated – lots of Californians and Minnesotans who were drawn to the mountains and snow.

Or, rather, the chance to speed down said mountains, on said snow, using a snowboard or skis. They might like a Denver-y gift anyway, or they might like a little gift package that reminds them of their hometown. Do a little homework to make sure!Marijuana

Marijuana was legalised in Denver in November 2012. We’re not sure how nice a gift it is, but if you know someone who partakes, they’ll possibly appreciate a years supply of potato chips. Maybe pizza? Probably both…

If you’re buying clothing for a Denverite, crisp shirts, strappy dresses and sparkly heels are not likely to be the best choice. Instead, get them something made by North Face. Or anything that promises to enhance their performance, send out GPS signals, wick moisture, or insulate them even at -30⁰.

Colorado-Rafting_300x240If you’re wealthy beyond your wildest dreams, you could give them a Subaru. Lots of people from Denver seem to really love their Subarus. If you are that wealthy, please make friends with us and get us a Subaru too. If you’re not that wealthy, how about an aerial topper so that they can find their Subaru in amongst all the others in the parking lot?

Zip-Line-Tours_300x240Denver has four Major League professional sports teams. There’s a fair chance that the Denverite you are buying a gift for is into at least one of them, so try to find out which one and get them something they’ll love – whether that’s tickets to a game, season tickets, a baseball signed by Todd Helton himself, or even just a jersey or cap with their team emblazoned on it.

There are many, many outdoorsy types living in Denver. And who can blame ‘em? Look what they have to work with. Whether its hurtling down snow, hiking and climbing, white water rafting, or any number of awesome activities, you can help them do the thing they love by getting them something they need or want for their hobby. New ski goggles, some flash new hiking gear…

Happy giving!
