Question: How does a pilot steer a Hot Air Balloon?

Answer: Balloons are pushed by the wind. Luckily the wind changes directions at different altitudes. By ascending and descending the pilot can essentially change the direction the balloon is traveling. Of course you can't always predict which way the wind will be blowing on any given day so you won't always land in the same place.

Question: We were given a Hot Air Balloon ride in Portland as a wedding present. My wife tends to get cold easily. How cold does it get in the balloon?

Answer: It will actually be about the same temperature as it is on the ground. The air temperature only changes a couple degrees for every thousand feet and that is compensated by the heat from the propane burners. Also, the balloon moves with the wind which means no wind chill. Check the weather before the trip and dress appropriately for the day.

Question: If we don't know exactly where we are going to land, how do we get back to our cars?

Answer: The pilot is in constant communication with a ground crew that will follow the balloon. Since the balloon travels with the wind, and won't fly in winds over 10 mph, the farthest you'll travel in an hour is about 10 miles.
