Q: Please can you tell us how it all began for Adventure Out?

A: I started Adventure Out in 2004 – I had just graduated from school. I had spent 5 years studying Engineering at MIT and graduated with a bachelors and masters degree from MIT. I returned home to the Silicon Valley area to work in the technology industry and lasted only 2-3 months before I knew I wanted to do something different with my life. I started Adventure Out to help people reconnect with nature. To encourage people from all walks of life to get outside, be active, and have adventures as a way of appreciating the natural environment in our area.

Q: Where did the passion for extreme outdoor activities stem from?

A: That’s just been a part of my life since day one. Growing up in Santa Cruz, California, you HAVE to be an outdoors geek. I’ve been surfing, climbing, mountain biking, and backpacking for as long as I can remember.

Q: What makes your experiences unique compared to similar ones on the market?
A: Adventure Out has always strove to be a leader in professionalism. In an industry where there are so many “fly by night” guide services – people without proper permitting/licensure, insurance, and safety training, we do things the RIGHT way. All our guides are professionals, and are trained to offer the highest quality outdoor experience.

Q: What would you say is the best part of the some of the experiences you offer?

A: Simply having the opportunity to be outside. We live in an amazing place here in Northern California, and it’s somewhat sad that most people in our area goes years without seeing the ocean, or the redwood forests. Let us help you get back to nature!

Q: Who would you say your experiences are most suited for?
A: Anyone and everyone – we run programs that are open-to-the-public, that just about anyone can sign up for, to team/group retreats that range from Google executives, to engineering teams from Facebook, to Girl Scout troops, soccer teams, Stanford University professor groups, small business team building, etc. You name it. We work with everyone and can scale our activities to be fun and thrilling for all skill levels.

Q: Is there anything else you would like to add that we haven’t covered?

A: Remember that Adventure Out is a 1% For The Planet business member. For 10 years straight now we donate 1% of all gross revenues to environmental charity. Adventure with us and know that a portion of your fees are going straight back in to protecting the spaces that we operate in.

Surf Lesson For Two

4 stars

Had a good time, learned some new things and overall I'd rate the experience and 'A'. my guest had a good time as well, she got some good pointers from the instructors that covered all the basics of surfing. The water conditions were a little rough, but still surfable. The instructors answered all questions and provided a positive learning environment.

- - Linda Mar Beach

Outstanding Instruction

5 stars

The instructors were outstanding in both instruction ability and motivational technique. They are true leaders in every sense and are the only reason I was able to get up on the board. Thank you!

Question: I see surfboards are provided by the surf school. Are they long boards? Should I borrow my cousin's board since that is what I'll be practicing on after the lesson?

Answer: All of the surfboards provided for the Bay Area Surf Lessons are long boards. Unless you are an intermediate surfer or above, it will be much easier to learn on a longer more stable surfboard. Once you've learned the basics in this beginner surfing class, you will be able to practice on another board, and perhaps even buy your own!

Question: What if the weather is too bad to surf that day?

Answer: Safety is of the highest priority! The Bay Area Surf Lessons may be rescheduled by the Instructor if there are high winds, heavy rain or even fog.

Question: I'm a little self-conscious about not being able to surf. How many other people will be in the lesson?

Answer: Not to worry, everyone will be a beginner in the class. The surf instructor to student ratio is 1 to 4 or less and there may be up to twelve students taking the lesson together.

Question: I'd like to take a surf class with my girlfriend, but she hates cold water. Do I need to worry about the water being too cold for her?

Answer: Not a problem. Luckily the surf school supplies wet suits, gloves and booties. There may be an initial shock when she jumps in the water, but after a few minutes the suit will warm up to a comfortable temperature.

Question: Do I need to know how to swim?

Answer: Yes, participants in the Surf Lessons must know how to swim with their head above water and must be able to swim to shore. Younger participants and weak swimmers will be kept in shallow waters. Please keep in mind that individuals who are pregnant, have broken bones or other physical conditions which are considered unsafe conditions are not eligible to participate and that the minimum age requirement is 8 years old. (If the participant is under the age of 18, a parent or guardian will need to sign a Liability Release Form prior to participation.)
