Step aboard the beautiful Schooner Fame, a full-scale replica of a Chebacco fishing schooner, for a one and three-quarter hour sail in the historic waters of Salem Sound with a guest.

Departing from Pickering Wharf Marina, this beautiful sightseeing sail in Massachusetts is a wonderful way to spend time enjoying the waters and the wildlife. Once you are onboard, the boat will head out to the Sound and offer amazing views of the coastline along the way. During your sail, you will also learn about the fishermen, pirates, privateers, traders and men of war who shaped our North Shore and more!

This Schooner Sail is the perfect way to spend time out on the water and enjoy a unique tour of Salem. Whether you are a native New Englander, or this is your first visit to Salem, this sightseeing sail on the Sound is a great way to explore the waters of Salem!

The Schooner Sails on Salem Sound are offered up to seven days a week, May thru October, subject to availability.

The Salem Sound Fame Schooner Sails have a sail time of approximately 1¾ hours.

Weather

The Salem Sound Schooner Scenic Sails may be rescheduled by the Captain due to high winds, heavy rain, fog or other inclement weather.

What To Wear

Dress comfortably, flat non-marking rubber-soled shoes, layers and sunglasses are recommended for this sailing adventure. A light jacket or sweater is also suggested as it tends to be cooler on the water.

Additional Information

Although food is not served on board, you are welcome to bring your own snacks and non-alcoholic beverages onboard. Coolers are not permitted. Wine, beer, water, soft drinks and snacks are available for purchase onboard. Passengers must be a minimum of 5 years of age.

Gratuity for the Captain and Crew is not included and may be extended following the sail.

The schooner fame was a good historical trip given that it was a replica of an 1812 privateer war ship. The crew circulated among the 16 passengers answering questions about the boat and the shore line. I was allowed take the tiller for a few minutes which I enjoyed.

Great Evening

Got the experience as a wedding present. It was a wonderful evening. We sailed the entire time out of the harbor, a little over an hour of sailing as we got back about 15 min early. The boat was clean and comfortable. It was a fantastic way to see Salem Harbor but also to spend a summer evening.

For my surprise 70th birthday party, I received two tickets to sail on the Fame. At first I was apprehensive since I get motion sickness and didn't know what kind of a day it would turn out to be having made reservations two weeks in advance. It turned out to be an unforgettably fantastic experience, and a beautiful clear warm day. I was able to enjoy a full supper at a close by restaurant on the dock after the sail. Hope to experience it again next year.

Overall the experience was a really great one. The guide was very informative and had just the right amount of 'instruction' time versus time for everyone to simply enjoy the ride. I would definitely go again, as would my sailing companion. It was a very romantic experience overall.

We had a glorious day on the water in Boston Harbor. The weather was perfect, which certainly added to the enjoyment. The boat was a nice reproduction of an earlt double masted schooner. The crew were friendly and competent. One of them climbed up to the crow's nest to unfurl one of the sails. The pirate fight reenactment was a little hokey, but I guess some of the kids enjoyed it. We just enjoyed the scenery and the beautiful day.

Question: I would like to gift this to my Brothers family. He has two young sons, is there an age limit?

Answer: Participation in the Salem Sound Schooner Sailing is limited to individuals weighing over 50lbs and a minimum of 6 years of age.
Question: My husband and I were gifted this for our anniversary. Are we permitted to bring our own cooler with snacks and beverages?

Answer: Coolers and alcohol are not permitted, but you can bring your own snacks. In addition there are snacks, soda, water and beer and wine available for purchase on the ship.
Question: I think my parents would enjoy the Salem Sound Schooner Sailing. My Dad has a little sailboat he uses on the lake. Is this hands on sailing? Would they let him help with the sails or maybe steer for a while?

Answer: It's not a hands on sail but, depending on the weather, they'll allow him to help raise the sails and maybe even take the wheel for a little while. Check with the Captain once aboard the ship.
Question: I am interested in the Salem Sound Schooner tour for my parents who will be visiting. Is it just a scenic sail around the harbor or do they tell you about the history of the area as well?

Answer: The tour combines both. As you sail around the sound the captain and crew will tell you stories about the rich history of the area. From the Salem Witch trials to the War of 1812, you're sure to learn a lot during your cruise.
Question: Are there restrooms onboard?

Answer: There is a restroom on board. It is below decks and accessed by descending a short ladder, so persons with limited mobility may wish to find a restroom ashore before coming aboard.
Question: We will be driving in from out of town to use this wonderful experience. Is there parking near the docks?

Answer: There is parking in the Pickering Wharf complex as well as metered parking on the street and a municipal garage at the intersection of Derby & Congress. Location and directions will be provided in your confirmation email after requesting a reservation.
Question: I'm looking for a gift for a friend, but I am not sure if they get seasick. What kind of feedback to you get about this sailing trip?

Answer: Seasickness on the Salem Schooner Sail is actually very rare. The tour takes place in protected waters close to shore.
