Get ready for thrills and spills on the South-Fork of the American River during this full-day Whitewater Rafting Adventure. Perfect for all skill levels, this Class III Rafting Trip is a great way to spend time out on the waters of this California River!

The fun begins in the morning when you meet your Guide at the Rafting Center located 50 minutes east of Sacramento in Coloma, CA. You will receive a brief orientation and safety overview prior to heading out to the river where you’ll receive your paddle and life jacket. Once ready you’ll launch rafts and practice paddling skills as you head for some easy rapids to get started. Next, the real fun of this outdoor adventure begins! You will paddle a total of thirteen miles down the American River. Satan’s Cesspool and the Hospital Bar rapids make this an adventure to remember!

The South Fork Rafting Trips are offered Thursday through Tuesday, the end of May to September, subject to availability. Trips typically begin at 8:00 AM.

How Long Is It

The American River Whitewater Rafting includes a 21 mile rafting trip and has a total duration of approximately 7 to 8 hours.

Weather

The South Fork American River Whitewater Rafting may be rescheduled due to high winds, heavy rain or other inclement weather, and low water levels. All decisions to cancel, move, or postpone scheduled trips will be made by the Guide the day of the reservation.

What To Wear

Dress comfortably, and bring a change of clothing. Recommended items include a water bottle, swimsuit, shorts, t-shirt, a fleece or jacket, outdoor sandals or non-slip sneakers, sunglasses or hat and sunscreen. Flip-Flops are not permitted and cotton clothing is not recommended.

Your rafting experience will take place with a Professional Guide and includes all rafting gear, and life jackets (life jackets will fit a maximum chest size of 52 inches).

Participants are advised to be well rested. Please avoid drinking alcohol 24 hours prior to the scheduled experience.

Individuals who are pregnant, have broken bones or other physical conditions such as heart or lung conditions, severe asthma, back problems, recent surgery, obesity or osteoporosis or any other condition which is considered unsafe are not eligible to participate.

The recommended minimum age for participants is 7 years old. All participants must be in good physical condition and know how to swim. For your safety reasons, Guides reserve the right to turn away anyone they feel will jeopardize the safety of the trip.

Participants are required to sign a Liability Release Form.

Question: The description for the South Fork American River Rafting experience says we will be traveling through Class III rapids. What exactly does that entail?

Answer: Class III rapids are defined by the International Scale of Rivers as having rapids with moderate, irregular waves which may be difficult to avoid and large waves or strainers that are easily avoided. This means that you'll encounter a variety of different wave types that are just perfect for a beginning and intermediate whitewater experience!
Question: What happens if the river drops too low? Will they cancel the rafting trip?

Answer: Both the South and Middle Forks of the river are fed by 15 upstream reservoirs and federal regulations require them to release water every Thursday through Monday. This, accompanied by the fact that the area typically receives decent rainfall throughout the summer months, means that the American River is one of the most reliable white water destinations in California.
Question: Where do we park and how do we get back to our cars?

Answer: There is plenty of parking at the meet location in Coloma, CA. You will launch from this site into a fun and easy section of the river. At the end of the trip you will be picked up by the shuttle and driven back to your vehicle.
Question: What are the differences between the Middle Fork and South Fork of the American River?

Answer: The South Fork is a steady Class III whitewater experience from top to bottom. It is a perfect fit for the beginner rafter or even the experienced rafter that would like to bring his family out to discover the thrill of white water. The Middle Fork ranges from Class III to Class V and is for the more adventure spirited.
Question: What should I wear and what do I need to bring with me on the rafting trip?

Answer: Recommended items to wear include a swimsuit, sunhat or visor, sun glasses (with a head strap), tennis shoes or river sandals (flip-flops are not permitted), a windbreaker, waterproof sunscreen, shorts, and dry clothes for wearing upon your return.
Waterproof, disposable cameras are available for purchase. However, it's difficult to take pictures while you're rafting! Professional photographers are positioned along the banks taking while you are in the rapids. These photos are available to purchase at the end of the trip.
Don't forget to bring spending money which you may needed for meals en route to and from you trip, for souvenir T-shirts and photographs or a guide tip.
Please do not bring pets and leave your valuables at home!

Answer: On the South Fork Rafting Trips a BBQ Lunch is typically served. Participants have the option of enjoying Beef or Veggie Burgers. Gluten Free options are also available.
